University of Arkansas Campus Historic Preservation Masterplan

The University of Arkansas was successful in receiving a highly competitive grant from the Getty Foundation to fund a campus-wide historic preservation master plan, comprehensive in scope, that would include, among other things, cataloging its historic resources including its buildings and landscapes, and generating recommendations for their preservation.  The plan was completed with significant involvement from the firms of Lord, Aeck & Sargent and The Jaeger Company.

The scope of the plan included training of staff in important maintenance techniques that would be used with regularity.  The project also involved engagement with the students.  The firm's principal, Aaron Ruby, met with students at the School of Architecture and assigned some students the responsibility of collecting information about some of its historic buildings.

Among recommendations to come out of the plan was to have the central core of the campus listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  That was accomplished in 2011, adding it to the list of schools in the Southeastern Conference that had historic districts on campus.
